Music Theory Course

This Music Theory Course teaches music theory at beginner level. It includes text, exercises video and illustrations.

It has three modules:

  1. The music staff and the music notes.
  2. Rhythm.
  3. Chords and Scales.
  4. Other elements of music: dynamics, tempo marks, musical instruments and symbols.

The student can study different modules at the same time. This means that the student can learn how to read notes in the treble clef in module 1 and learn minims and semibreves in module 2.

This course includes note flashcards for the treble clef, the bass clef, rhythm, chords and key signatures  and several revision exercises and final quiz for each module.

The Method

Each lesson of this course will include all or some of these activities:

  • Video explanation
  • Text explanation
  • PDF exercises
  • Interactive Quizzes and Final Quiz for each module
  • Ear Training Exercises with rhythm reading, listening to intervals and chords

At the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • Read notes on the treble clef and on the Bass Clef
  • Read rhythm
  • Know the different major and minor scales and key signatures
  • Know some chords and the basics harmony
  • Read a musical score in a very short amount of time
  • Recognize music symbols, words and abbreviations in a musical score
  • Understand the basic principles of pitch, rhythm, meter, scales, intervals, melody, harmony, form
  • Listen to musical examples and recognize what rhythm/interval/chord was played.

Who should take this course?

  • This course is for anyone who always wanted to learn how to read a musical score, but never really did
  • This course is for anyone who wants to start writing music or songs, or learning an instrument and play by reading a score
  • This course is  for anyone who wants to learn more about the wonderful language of music
  • This course is for beginners and is not intended as an advanced course, or for people who already can read music

What do I need before starting the course?

Having a piano, or a small keyboard will be great in order to learn and practice the concepts and exercises in the course, but it’s not a requirement.

During the course, I’ll give links and free online resources, such as an online piano.
